How did you find our community?

I saw a link to it in <lj user=xclara_bowx> journal.

What is your favorite/'s genre of books?

Mostly I read thriller and horror books. Though lately I've been trying my best to broaden my horizons.

How many books to you read on average a month?

Before I got pregnant I would read up to 10 books a month. So far I've picked up a total of two books in the past fourteen weeks.

What kind of things would you like to see added to this community?

More book of the month suggestions. (I'll agree with the person who posted before me.)

What is your favorite book? Or top five if you prefer?

I really enjoy Dan Brown's Angels & Demons, and The DaVinci Code. Other than that, I enjoy Dean Koontz' Winter Moon, and The Taking.

When did you begin your love of reading?

When I was younger I hated to read. I won't go into the long story, but my grandmother was the main source of this hatred. I don't think I actually started to enjoy reading until I was in the fourth grade. I forget what book it was I had read, but I enjoyed it so much, I was able to go read it to the first grade class room.

Do you also like to write?

I love to write. I've been working on and off on my novel for six years. A long time for a novel I know, but there's times the drive just isn't there.

Where is your favorite place to read?

Everywhere. As long as I am able to stay focused on the book and nothing else.

Was there one book that began your love of reading?

Yes there was. It was something about fourth grade being a horrible year for this girl, because her mother became her permanent substitute teacher.

Are there any book genres' that you personally dislike?

Not really. Though there have been certain books, I would try to read and just couldn't get into.

How would you feel about choosing a book for the month by poll to discuss?

I think it's a good idea.

Anything else you would like to add about yourself personally?

Not right now. I'm sorry. I'm not that interesting.

Ok, Sorry...

Ok, I am sorry I know awhile back in Feb. I meantioned making a list of our books, to see if we had any that were the same book. So that in June we could all read one book and then talk about it. This could be rare and none of us having the same book, but it doesn't hurt to look. So today I complied my list (I do have more, but thought I would start with these.) and now I will post it to see what everyone has.

My books as follows:
Night Prayers By PD Cack
Lovers & Players By Jackie Collins
Witchling By Yasmine Galenorn
Sam's Letters to Jennifer By James Patterson
A Walk to Remember By Nicholas Sparks
CSI: Snake Eyes By Max Allan Collins

An Idea

I have an idea for us members. This coming month everyone should make a list of books they have at home (don't over do it if you have a LOT) and then we'll compare them. See if we have any of the same books. If we do we pick one and for the month of June read it as a group, at the end of June we can talk about it. What does everyone thing?

The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: A Memoir (Bill Bryson)
by Jennnnn. (jennylucas)
at February 6th, 2007 (10:23 pm)

Why or how did you select this book? I saw it on the shelf at the library.  I've read other Bill Bryson books and really enjoyed them so I gave it a shot.

What is the time frame (setting) of the book? It is set in the 1950s.

How much time elapses (passes) from the beginning to the end? He talks mostly about the time from his birth to the beginning of the 1960s, but he doesn't tell the story in a linear fashion.

Where does the story take place? Des Moines, Iowa

Who are the three main characters? Bill himself and his parents

What are your favorite new words from the piece? Mimeograph

Do you have any quotations you saved? Yes, three:

"He was the nicest human being I have ever met.  It was like being friends with God."

"...or just sit back and enjoy saying some of those splendid words that existed in the fifties and are no longer heard: mimeograph, rotisserie, stenographer, icebox, dime store, rutabaga, Studebaker, panty raid, bobby socks, Sputnik, beatnik, canasta, Cinerama, Moose Lodge, pinochle, daddy-o."

"...in our hour all idle moments were spent reading something..."

What new facts did you learn that you hadn't known before? I just learned a little more about how life was in the 1950s.

What was the main idea of the book? It was just the authors memoirs of his life in the 1950s.

Would you like to read other books by the same author? Why? Yes.  I have read other of his books.  He's a very witty writer.
